The NZD/USD pair has staged a recovery, benefiting from broad USD weakness caused by disappointing U.S. economic data and escalating global trade tensions.
Weaker U.S. Economic Data:
The latest US ADP Employment Report revealed that private businesses added only 135,000 jobs in September, falling short of expectations. Additionally, the ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI hit its lowest level in nearly a decade, signaling potential economic challenges. These factors contributed to a decline in the US Dollar Index, which fell below the 99.00 mark, further weakening the USD.
Escalating US-EU Trade Tensions:
The U.S. announced plans to impose a 10% tariff on EU aircraft and a 25% tariff on EU agricultural and industrial products, worsening the global trade outlook. This pessimistic trade environment has indirectly supported the NZD as investors sought alternatives to the USD.
Impact of Chinese Holiday:
Reduced business activity during China’s holiday period has put pressure on Asian markets. However, the weakened USD provided upward momentum for the NZD, helping it recover from recent declines.
Resistance Levels: The pair faces immediate resistance at the 0.6285 level, marked by a three-week downtrend line. A further push higher could target the 21-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) at 0.6330.
Support Levels: If the NZD/USD falls below 0.6250, sellers may push the pair toward the psychological level of 0.6200.
Investors should monitor New Zealand’s upcoming ANZ Commodity Price Index data for September, expected at 0.4% (previous: 0.3%), as it could influence the NZD. Additionally, developments in trade headlines during China’s holiday season may introduce further volatility for the kiwi dollar.
While short-term momentum favors the NZD/USD’s recovery, ongoing trade tensions and mixed global economic signals could limit the upside. Traders should remain cautious and keep an eye on key resistance and support levels for potential trading opportunities.
